What is secret shopping and other frequently
asked questions?
What does the secret shopping team do?
Our shoppers are independent contractors who visit assigned businesses, seemingly as ordinary customers. In reality, they have predetermined objectives for the visit—a list of observations they are asked to make. After their visits, they share their opinions using an online survey tool. That information ultimately gives business leaders a snapshot of the customer experience through the customer's eyes and can help them improve their customer service practices. For providing this service, the secret shopping team is paid.
How does it work?
When there is a shopping opportunity in your area, you receive an email with basic information. If you pursue the assignment, more details are provided. At that point, you can accept or decline.
Once you accept, you receive all the information you need to complete the "shop." If the assignment includes a survey or evaluation form, we'll provide a copy in advance so you know exactly what you'll be looking for in your shopping experience. Accepting the assignment is a contractual agreement, so you'll want to complete the assignment as specified so you are eligible for compensation.
How much can I earn?
The amount will vary for each assignment, usually from $8 to $50, sometimes with an allowance to purchase food or products that you keep. Your earnings also depend on the number of assignments you accept, how thoroughly you complete your assignment and whether or not you meet your deadline.
Since you are considered an independent contractor, you are responsible for any income taxes resulting from your earnings. Some of your expenses may be tax-deductible, consult your tax preparer to check on deductions.
How do I get paid?
As a shopper, you are compensated according to the details described in your assignment. Often, completing a post-shopping survey online is all it takes to be eligible for compensation. After we receive and process your receipts, we mail a check to the address you provided. Checks are mailed once per month.
How long does it take?
Each assignment will vary in the time it takes. Most often, assignments are comprised of two parts:
- A visit to a business. If this is part of your assignment, travel time will vary depending upon your location and the location of the business. You are responsible for your own travel expenses.
- A post-visit survey. The online surveys typically take about 30 minutes to complete. Unless you are given specific instructions, you are free to conduct the visit, complete the survey, and perform other tasks on the days and times that work best for you, as long the assignment is completed thoroughly and before the given deadline.
How many days will I have to complete the assignment?
You'll find the specific time frame in your email before you accept the assignment. In many cases, you will have five to ten business days to complete the visit and survey. You will also receive a reminder email at the midpoint of the assignment if we haven't received your completed survey or evaluation.
Can others come with me during my assignment?
Yes, as long as they are not a distraction from your assignment or prevent you from doing the assignment in a professional manner. You may also want to consider if it's appropriate for them to be in the store or location you are to visit. If there's any question, it's probably better not to take them with you.
Will others know I'm at the business to make an evaluation?
It's important that others NOT know what you're doing. It may cause them to treat you differently or interfere with your observations.
What if I'm confronted by an employee of the store or location I'm observing?
Politely and honestly answer their question, and excuse yourself from the location. It is imperative you remain professional and treat the individuals with respect. Then, immediately contact the Participant Coach at coach@primecontactresearch.com—they will instruct you on what to do next.
How often will assignments be available?
That depends on the number of clients and shoppers. We will notify you by email of assignments that match information you provide us in your Prime Contact profile.
